An Eventful evening of Land Navigation! The first evening on the Land Nav Course taught by the Committee instructors. Somehow myself, Candidates Hererra (1st Plt) and Shea (2nd Plt) as well as another were walking from our first points to our second. It was pitch black and we all seemed to be going to the same place. It was practice so we all just said "what the heck" and fell into line one after another. On point was IOC Hererra followed by myself and Shea and then the other IOC. Well, we started down this little path and Hererra (who also had the white lens flashlight I might add) seemed to disappear in a blaze of white lasers (OK he fell). I called to him "are you all right." He said yes and that he had just tripped on a log. Understandable given the severe darkness. So he gathered himself (and his respect) and we started off again. We no more made it 100 m when that incredible laser light show from Hererra again filled my blind eyes. This time was different though. There was no light anymore. All we heard was this "thud" and the light twitched around for a moment and disappeared. This time as I called out to Hererra his voice came back a bit troubled and muffled. I figured something must be wrong so we all kind rushed up to find out his predicament. Well, when we came up on our fearless leader this time he was in a fix. He was laying at the bottom of a 10 ft. deep hole face down in the mud. He had been walking along and then all of the sudden there was no more, as if the earth had just swallowed him up. He had just disappeared from the "formation." You talk about your breaks in contact, let me tell ya! He was actually very lucky to not have been hurt, but that did not keep us from laughing about it for the rest of the evening. |
